Why rail re-profiling ?
Problems of Light Rail networks
- More vehicles per hour
- Less time available for maintenance
- Less money available for maintenance
- Different types of vehicles on same lines (especially tram)
- Corrugation and waves grow in a short time
- Different wear on straight lines, in curves and in switches
Corrugations and rail head defects cause a lot of different problems:
- Increased wear to: wheel / Rail ballast-sleeper system
- Wheel: rail running geometry
- Vehicle dynamic: travel behaviour / security / comfort
- Switch technique: wear
- Network: ballast / slap track
- Track machine
- Ground machine
- Bridge dynamic
Why rail re-profiling?
- To improve the wheel –rail contact (wheelpath)
- To increase the life-time of the rail
- To reduce the travel noise (airborne noise as well as groundborne noise)
- To increase travel comfort
- Above all: to increase safety on track!
Increase of travel speed, higher axle-loads in combination with higher train frequencies cause a reduction of repair-and maintenance time during the night.
